Mental Health First Aid

Learn how to provide mental health first aid to friends, family members, co-workers, and other adults.

The training will provide you practical skills to support an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis, until professional help is available or the situation improves.

About the training

The Standard Mental Health First Aid course teaches you how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

You’ll learn:

  • the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults
  • how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem
  • the treatments and supports that may help

What you’ll learn

You’ll practise how to apply mental health first aid across common problems and crisis situations, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic events

Become an MHFAider

Adults who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders) — with the knowledge, confidence and skills to offer support and share helpful information when it matters most.

At the end of the course, you’ll complete a short assessment to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider).
Accreditation is valid for 3 years.
