About the TUSA

The Tasmanian University Student Association (TUSA), previously known as the Tasmania University Union (TUU), was established in 1899 to represent students.

The Association is a student-led collective dedicated to two core principles: student leadership and our student community.

Whenever a decision is being made that is likely to affect UTAS students, we always strive to have a student leader at the table.

As a UTAS student, you have access to Association staff, services, equipment, and facilities:

  • Lobbying and representation on issues important to you as a student
  • Independent support and advocacy
  • Financial support and counseling
  • Social connection through our 130+ Clubs and Societies and student-led events
  • Great facilities such as Clubs & Societies meeting rooms, kitchen, and lounge areas equipped with a ping pong table, Wii, and board games
  • Safe spaces including Women’s Space, Queer Space, and Parenting Rooms.

The Association’s student leaders are elected by students and are accountable to students. The Association and Student Reps are fiercely independent when it matters, and we work closely with our University partners to achieve the best outcomes for students.

Our Ethical Investment Strategy

In 2021, the TUSA made the switch to ethical investment, to align our values with the work and campaigning undertaken by students for over a decade in advocating for the University of Tasmania to shift to ethical investment. As a result of this change, we have partnered with Tas Ethical to deliver an ethically sound portfolio that we believe has a positive impact on our local and international community. If you would like to read more about our investment portfolio, our 2023 ethical investment report is available here: Tas Ethical – Ethical Impact Report 2023

In November 2023 the TUSA Board of Management made the difficult decision to move to a fully defensive investment portfolio for review in 6 months, in light of uncertainty regarding the TUSA’s funding agreement with the University and economic pressures. We are committed to a return to our broader ethical investment model as utilised in 2023 once we have mitigated the existing financial risks.
