Refectory Steps
The Ref Steps are a well known space where students have been running events for decades.
If you have an event which is best run outdoors, the Ref Steps is a great option. There is plenty of room to move around, meet people, and hang out. The shape of the space also allows for a theatre-style set up with the steps creating an informal staging area.
There is also a BBQ available.
The Ref
Located at level 2 below the main TUSA Admin Floor, The Ref has the following facilities:
- Tables and chairs for seating
- 4x Cocktail Tables for networking events
- Games space (a pool table, table tennis table, arcade machine)
- A fridge in the back cafe area (please speak with staff if requiring use of this)
- Atrium chillout space with comfortable chairs
- A hot water dispenser at a tabletop bench
The Ref is a well known space that previously functioned as a canteen and chill-out space along with The Ref Steps. Since it’s closure in 2019, it had been reopened and repurposed by TUSA in July 2023. The Ref now functions as both a room for hire and also for our TUSA Food Hub.
If you have an event that’s indoors and requires you to cater for a large number of people, then the Ref is a great option. There is plenty of room to move around, meet people, and hang out.
Women’s Room
The TUSA values connection between women on campus, and has a dedicated women’s space in Sandy Bay which is perfect for relaxing with like-minded women, and building networks and a sense of belonging.

It is a comfortable, quiet space where students can relax and build lasting connections and community.
The Equity Space has a sofa, tables and chairs, some reading materials, LGBTI+ information, and is close to kitchen.
