TUSA Food Hub - Thursday 5th December
12:00 pm – 12:00 pm 1 Churchill Avenue, Sandy Bay TAS, Australia
TUSA Food Hub
The TUSA Food Hub is a free food initiative and support
service for Utas students. It is exclusively based in Hobart at The Ref,
below the TUSA Building, Sandy Bay Campus (you will see our Food Hub sign).
We open every Thursday from 11am to 2pm over the exam period and semester break (excluding public
holidays). Due to a training session at The Ref, we will open the Food Hub from 12pm to 3 pm on 5th of December.
The TUSA Food Hub has been set up to ensure no
students goes hungry and is designed to provide food relief to students who are
experiencing food insecurity. Our service operates through donations and
volunteers.
_____________________________________________________
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much will it cost me to access food from the Food Hub?
TUSA Food Hub is a free service for UTAS Students, however registration for collection is essential and you MUST bring your UTAS student ID card and show to Food Hub staff/volunteers.
To provide this service, we partner with Loaves & Fishes, Foodbank & Gateway Life, who provide us with produce for Food Hub which we redistribute to Utas students. We rely on donations for our Food Hub, which means that the stock on our shelves varies weekly.
Please note that whilst we endeavour to provide you with pantry items that you want/need, there’s no guarantee that these will be available at the Food Hub. Our shelves are sourced from donations, and these vary from time to time. Please note that whilst we’ll endeavour to accommodate your needs, we may not always have this on our shelves as this is entirely due to donations, so please be kind to our staff and volunteers. We won’t tolerate unkind or unruly behaviour.
How does your ticketing system work?
Tickets are capped weekly to ensure even distribution of goods to students and to ensure that we don’t run out of food for our ticket holders. Ticket sales are broken down into 50-minute service to help with this, they are:
- 12pm to 12:50pm
- 1pm to 1:50pm
- 2pm to 2:50pm
Once you have purchased a ticket, you will receive your ticket and a Food Hub Collection Information via email. Please keep an eye out for your emails!
Please ensure you arrive within the time indicated on your ticket. The Food Hub is inaccessible for the last 10 minutes of each hour to allow time for our team to check stock levels.
You can only register and collect for ONE ticket per week. You are UNABLE to collect for friends.
How does your rewards program work?
To encourage sustainability and reduce waste, we have implemented a rewards program. Students can utilise our NEW Food Hub Rewards Card, where students who bring their own containers/jars for bulk food items and return spray bottles for Z-Water cleaning product, receive a stamp.
Every 10 stamps, you receive a reward (this might be a tote bag, an extra pantry item, a coffee voucher, a Unique Tassie Experience etc.).
What products do you stock in Food Hub?
We endeavour to provide staple pantry items, bread and fresh produce at Food Hub. Our stock varies weekly, based on the donations that we receive. We aim to provide you with the pantry items and produce that you want/need, however we can’t guarantee that these items will be available weekly due to us relying on donations to stock our Food Hub. Please be kind to our staff and volunteers. We won’t tolerate unkind or unruly behaviour.
How many items can I take per visit?
To ensure everyone has equal access to food items, we have introduced a limit to how many items you can take per visit. Please only take what you need.
- You can only take a maximum of 4 different pantry items per visit. Pantry items include any item on the shelves (e.g. rice, milk, flour).
- You can’t double up on the same kind of pantry item (e.g. 1 type of pasta per person, even if the total pantry items you have taken is less than 4)
- Fruits and vegetable limits are indicated on each food bin.
- Please note that once you have taken all the items that you need, you will not be allowed back in for change-of-mind purposes.
Can I come to Food Hub earlier or later than the time indicated on my ticket?
You will only be able to enter the Food Hub based on the ticket you purchased for that hour; this is to ensure all students have equal access to the service. However, we understand that this isn’t always possible, if the time available for purchase does not suit you, please email us by 6pm the day prior to service day.
How do I access food outside of Food Hub hours?
Between 9am to 12am on Thursday, free bread will be available to access via the bread stand outside The Food Hub and on Wednesdays there is free bread at the TUSA Hub in Lazenby’s on the Sandy Bay Campus. If you are in significant need, please reach out to our Student Advocacy Team and they will assist you to find further support.
